Steve Brine raised what he described as ‘horrifying’ media reports about rainforest clearance in the Brazilian Amazon in the House of Commons on Wednesday 3rd July.
The Winchester & Chandler’s Ford MP intervened on the Prime Minister’s G20 Statement, and told the House about reports stating that an area of Amazon rainforest the size of a football pitch is being cleared in Brazil every minute.
He asked Theresa May; “Was any mention made of this act of planetary self-harm at the summit, which seems to have resumed with menace since President Bolsonaro took power and if not, please can the UK Government make urgent enquiries to establish the position, which is surely in none of our interests.”
The Prime Minister replied to say that issue of climate change covered a broad range of issues and that she would look into the situation.
It was the threat to the rainforests reported during the 1980s that inspired Steve Brine to join Friends of the Earth and become interested in politics.
