Local MP and Public Health Minister Steve Brine visited Tesco in his Winchester constituency today to see how Tesco and Diabetes UK are teaming up to raise funds and help people to get more active.
As part of the 1 Million Steps challenge, participants will have 3 months to get walking, running, hopping or dancing to reach their targets, either in teams or individually.
Steve met some of the volunteers signing up shoppers and Tesco colleagues, and said, despite his busy role, he looked forward to tackling and supporting the steps challenge.
During the visit Steve also met Pharmacy Manager Harman, who is offering free diabetes checks to customers in store this weekend, and volunteers from the Winchester & Eastleigh Diabetes Support Group who were on-hand to give advice to members of the public.
Jon Roberts, Store Manager said; "It was a pleasure to welcome Steve to our store this weekend. We've had a really good response from colleagues and customers to the One Million Steps campaign and it is great to see our local MP and Public Health Minister getting involved to support the cause."
Steve Brine added; "Diabetes is one of the great public health challenges of our time and we know lifestyle factors, especially being overweight, play a major role in the incidence of Type 2. We need a real partnership between business, Government and individuals to meet this and promoting an active lifestyle, as well as giving clear information about the condition, is vital."
