Prospective Conservative MP for Winchester, Steve Brine, joined the team at Winchester Hospital Radio for an interview as part of the stations 23rd birthday celebrations.
He was interviewed by WHR Chairman, Tony Knight, for the 'Person to Person' programme (WHR’s version of Desert Island Discs) at the studios within Winchester's Royal Hampshire County Hospital.
The programme, which will be broadcast during the next few weeks, is 30 minutes long and includes chat plus two chosen pieces of music. Steve chose 'A Song for you' by The Carpenters and 'Everything's Changing' by Keane.
While there, Steve Brine also took a tour of the studios and visited St Cross Ward where he took part in an outside broadcast with patients.
Steve is a former hospital radio presenter himself (at Radio Lion located within the Royal Surrey County Hospital in Guildford) and professional broadcaster; he has spent time with BBC Radio, independent local radio and WGN Radio in Chicago, USA.
He says; "This was one of the best things I have done since becoming the local Parliamentary Candidate. I have huge affection for hospital radio which provides an amazing service to patients across the country. Winchester Hospital Radio is run impecably by Tony Knight and Anna O'Brien, the station's programme controller.
"Hospital radio gave me a brilliant grounding in the radio business and allowed me to go onto a successful career in professional radio. WHR are an integral part of our local hospital and the patients' clearly value what they do very highly. I was really impressed with the level of interaction they have with the patients.
"Hospital Radio stations are run by hugely dedicated people who have to do everything - from fundraising to buying the records, maintaining the equipment and presenting the shows. Their part in patient care and their recovery shouldn't be overlooked."
