Winchester Cathedral held a very special service this evening to celebrate the opening of our new hospice.
Steve Brine and his son, William, attended alongside the Lord Lieutenant, Mayor of Winchester and all the team who will run Winchester's first adult hospice. Several hundred members of the public applied for a ticket and enjoyed an hour of hymns, prayers and stories about its development.
Steve says; "When I think back to the very start of my time here, before I was actually elected, I remember people saying how great it would be to see an adult hospice open in the city. It seemed like a big ask but a combination of the generosity of local people - and a determination from Hampshire Hospital Foundation Trust - saw it become a reality.
"I am so proud of what's been acheived here and the quality of our new facility. Having seen it as a derelict building, building site and every stage in-between, it is very special to see the finished article. I know the service it will provide will be of comfort to so many people over the years and I keep the team in my prayers always."
