The Prime Minister has revealed the Government’s plan to overhaul health and social care, via new revenue gained by a 1.25% rise to National Insurance.
The PM announced his plans to the House of Commons in front a full benches, which included Winchester’s MP, Steve Brine.
Steve has praised the PM for “gripping this issue”, speaking to the House today, for the first time this term, saying; “I'll study the plans the PM has promised to set out and I want to thank him for them, but I just want to ask him, on behalf of my constituents and their families trapped, right now, in the spiral of rising care costs and their fast-disappearing resources.
As we develop this new system, which he's promised can I urge the Prime Minster and the Health Secretary to consider those, for whom this is their present, not just those looking many years into the future.”
Boris Johnson responded; “I absolutely agree with what my Honourable Friend has said and that’s the tragedy of decades of failure to tackle this, the people are now facing these costs, but what we're doing is investing, as we have done throughout the pandemic, I think about 6 billion pounds in dealing with the immediate cost of social care and to try to help people through this very difficult time.
But what this package offers is a way of developing a long term solution enabling, we hope, the private sector to come in and give people a long term plan to fix the costs of their own social care, knowing that the government will remove the risk of those catastrophic costs. That is the advantage of what we're doing today.”
