Winchester's MP was in attendance as the Transport Trust unveiled a plaque to mark the first recorded UK car journey (known as the Ellis Run), which took place on 5th July 1895 at Micheldever Station.
A budding reporter from Micheldever Church of England Primary School interview the former journalist and MP, Steve Brine. Pupils have been studying journalism this term and used this opportunity to put their skills into practice. Five pupils compiled a set of questions each, to put to celebrities gathered to celebrate the unveiling of the Red Wheel Commemorating the First Car Journey in Britain.
Steve Brine said, “This was a really special occasion and great to mark such a momentous event that took place right here in Micheldever Station. You could say, transport’s coming home.”
Sue Bell, local event organiser said, “How lucky we were to meet present-day friends and neighbours at a sunny, open-air event whilst celebrating the First Car Journey (not preceded by a Red Flag). Members of the Veteran Car Club, and others who came along to support, have such dedication in maintaining, and sharing, these magnificent vehicles. The school children, and their teachers, were a great asset to the occasion; not even Lord Montagu of Beaulieu escaped interrogation by a young Micheldever Station resident.”
