Local MP Steve Brine once again sought assurances that Britain’s current high food standards would remain in place one the UK left the EU at the end of this year.
Speaking in the Commons this evening, Steve intervened on Minister, Victoria Prentis MP, who is the Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Farming, Fisheries and Food, as she was making a speech on Lords Amendments to the Agriculture Bill.
Steve quoted her recent letter to MPs which stated that accepting Lords backed amendments that sort to enshrine higher standards into UK law would be a barrier to future trade deals with other countries.
He said; “I do not doubt for one second her sincerity. I have known her for years and she is a Minister of the utmost integrity, and I do not doubt anybody in her Department either, but is the view that she has expressed at the Dispatch Box today shared in heart and mind across the whole of Government, including the Department for International Trade?”
