Steve Brine and the Conservative Future team are mobbed by first years at annual freshers' fayre.
First year students from across the area – and the country – arrived at the University of Winchester this weekend and gathered (on Saturday 22 September) for the annual ritual that is freshers’ fair.
Prospective Winchester MP, Steve Brine, and the Conservative Future team were there and everyone wanted a bit of Boris!
Tory MP and candidate for the Mayor of London, Boris Johnson, was the pin-up boy of this year’s stand from the Conservatives and students responded with great enthusiasm – swamping stand 74 for their free goody bag and ‘Warhol’ style Boris posters.
Speaking at the event, Steve Brine said; “As a former fresher, and student union President myself, I know this can be a daunting time for many first year students. That is why we tried to have a bit of a laugh with the students and the Boris theme certainly came up with the goods. We had to send out for more supplies within the first hour, and several more times after that, such was the demand to sign up at our stand and collect our goody bag.”
A number of the students said how refreshing it was that the Conservatives were the only political party present not to be ramming politics down their throats at the end of what can be a pretty demanding first week for them. Winchester Conservative Future rep, James Stephens, adds; ”Winchester is not a political university, especially when compared with bigger places such as Manchester and Liverpool or even Southampton. I guess if you don’t know Winchester very well you probably would think hard political posturing was the way to go.”
One of the first year students staffing the Conservative Future stand commented; “If you looked at the stand of the Liberal Party next to the local Conservatives the contrast was staggering, both in terms of those on duty and what they were offering new students. I think it just about said it all when one of them said to me ‘I just don’t get the whole Boris thing’ and shook their head disapprovingly!”
All freshers who attended the Conservative Future stand received a FREE goodie bag with vouchers and gifts from:
- Winchester Kebab Houses (ACE Kebabs)
