Local MP Steve Brine used his experience as a former Public Health Minister during a debate on tobacco control policy today.
He spoke in a debate organised by the backbench business committee on England's ambition to be smoke-free by 2030 and the impact of Covid on that policy.
It was led by City of Durham MP, Mary Kelly Foy, and responded to by Health Minister Ed Argar.
Mr Brine said; "It was a pleasure to speak in this debate and revisit some of the issues I worked so hard on as the Minister. As I said in the debate, I 100% back the Government's continued ambition on this but to meet our target by the 2030 date we will need to focus and get our skates on.
"Covid has in some ways made it more attainable but, with or without the pandemic, we're right up against what is possible to get there."
