Steve Brine visited the Stroke Support Group (Winchester and District) on Monday 28th May, to find out more about their Winnall set up.
The group, which is self-funded and staffed by experienced volunteers, was set up in 2010, and is based at Winnall Community Centre on Garbett Road.
Secretary Barbara Knight said: "The group was set up in 2010 to provide a focal point for people living across the Winchester district who have had a stroke.
"We bring together people with stroke-related problems, and provide a relaxed and friendly atmosphere. We find that by sharing their experiences, people discover new ways of coping with the everyday challenges of life after a stroke, and we encourage everyone to take part in varied and interesting challenges."
Activities focus on maintaining the physical and mental level already reached by members and, where possible, encouraging further improvement. Emphasis is placed on the active participation of members in discussion groups, arts and crafts, keep fit, computing, reading, writing or communication by any means possible, outings, music and talks on interesting subjects.
Steve, who visited with his wife Susie, said: "I first met Barbara when I spoke at a speech therapy event in our hospital last year and the new support group was something she was passionate about setting up then. Now it's here and its work supporting people after stroke is so important.
"The activities are great and can certainly aid recovery but more often than not it's the companionship and the friendship that helps stroke survivors rebuild their lives and just feel normal again. I am so pleased this group is thriving and know it will go on supporting many local people for years to come."
