Local MP, Steve Brine, was in Downing Street today to take part in an anti-social behaviour roundtable.
The event follows a new plan announced by Ministers yesterday which establishes a zero-tolerance approach to anti-social behaviour, ensuring people feel safe.
Key points include:
- Anti-social behaviour is unacceptable. It prevents people from spending time in their local area, makes women and girls feel unsafe, and erodes a sense of community. Tackling this crime is key to levelling up and restoring pride in local communities.
- That is why we are cracking down on offenders with swifter and more visible justice, tougher punishments, a ban on nitrous oxide, a stronger policing response in anti-social behaviour hotspots, and new tools for communities to regenerate and restore local pride.
- This is central to our efforts to level up opportunity and grow the economy – because it’s impossible for people to realise their talents, businesses to succeed, or communities to flourish, if people don’t feel safe in the place they call home.
Steve says; "I was keen to attend the event and wanted to make the point about the need for join up with Education about school absences and the Supporting Families programme to back-up our teachers. I have had discussions with a handful of headteachers in recent months for who this is a very real issue. It is often a small number of the same families causing big problems in their local area and we need a coordinated joined-up approach to help because, right now, they're feeling very alone and it's impacting on everyone.
"I will have further meetings with key Ministers and continue to do all I can to support local schools."
And he added; "I was very pleased to see, within this package, that nitrous oxide is to be banned and police given more powers to test for drugs on arrest. When I have been out on patrol with the Winchester Litterpickers I have picked up used N.O cannisters and they can be very dangerous."
