Clinicians across Hampshire and the Isle of Wight have now published their Sustainability and Transformation Plan, which will plot the course for future health and social care services launched by the local NHS.
The plan recognises that people are generally living longer, but also living with multiple long-term physical and mental health conditions, and accepts there are challenges around people staying in hospital longer than they need to, issues with General Practice, and the rising demand for services. It now sets out the details of six core delivery programmes and four enabling programmes – the priority work that partners in the health and care system are undertaking together to transform outcomes for the public.
Importantly, the STP does not include any recommendations for the future of emergency and acute care in Winchester, Basingstoke and Southampton, and it also takes into account the plans to build thousands of new homes in Hampshire over the coming five years, which will bring ever increasing demands for health and care provision.
Steve Brine MP said: "My constituents want access to world class services but we know society's healthcare needs have changed and the NHS needs to adapt if it's to keep pace. With more elderly people, greater awareness of mental health issues, higher expectations of cancer treatment and the care we get from hospital at weekends, we've a huge challenge.
"So I welcome this plan, which has been developed by local doctors and health professionals – not politicians – and its ambition for our area, but the real interest for me comes next year when we expect a decision on the future of acute and emergency care at Winchester Hospital. I am, as ever, working closely with the local NHS to make the case for the services we need."
Steve Brine has been closely briefed on the STP throughout its construction and will be leading a chance for constituents to discuss the plan with senior NHS leaders in coming months.
