Winchester MP Steve Brine spoke at Basepoint in Winnall to highlight the effectiveness of apprenticeships on Wednesday 6th April.
During a ten-minute speech, the MP told of the need to engage with young people, and mentioned Government plans to increase the number of apprentices across the country by 75,000, to record figures of 350,000.
Guests also heard how Sparsholt College and The London Apprenticeship Company have created a unique initiative for the businesses of the Winnall Estate to introduce an easier and low risk way to take on Apprentices. Traditionally Apprenticeships have been focused at purely blue collar) roles, such as engineering and trades, and this now extends to white collar professions, such as admin, sales and customer services.
Speaking at the event, which was co-sponsored by the Daily Echo, he said: “I refuse to believe that Britain is doomed to dwindle into a race of pseudo-celebrities and merchant bankers. On the contrary, we believe that it is British manufacturing, and the practical skills that underpin it, that must lead us into renewed economic growth.
“We must intensify our efforts to re-establish apprenticeships as the primary form of practical training.”
Bianca Jackson, a human resources assistant at Sparsholt College began employment as an apprentice. She told guests: “I have learnt so much. It has been a great opportunity. This is something I enjoy. It is different every day and there are always new challenges.”
