Steve Brine joined the Greening Alresford campaign on Saturday for their event, held at Perins School.
The Alresford Greening campaign put on a special event on Saturday, February 27 2010.
Their Low Carbon Living Fair brought over 20 environmental stalls, a programme of talks and a debate on climate change by the Conservative, Labour and Liberal Democrat Prospective MP's. They were also joined the by the lead candidate for the Winchester Green Party. It was chaired by TV legend Chris Packham.
Steve Brine, who attended the fair with his young family said; “The Low Carbon Fair was a good idea from the Alresford Greening campaign and while I am sure they would have liked more residents from the town to attend, I think it was very well worth doing. Anyone who grew up in the 1980's would have shared my delight to meet Chris Packham.
"The subject of climate change is one of the biggest issues that will face the next Parliament and it was good to debate the issues with Alresford people and, more importantly, hear what they had to say.
“While we must never lose sight of the environmental imperative for carbon reduction, I think there is also a compelling economic case for going green. A more balanced economy must include challenging the dependency of our economy on carbon-based energy and I was pleased to get a chance to go into a little more detail on that at the debate.
“I think insulation of existing housing stock is the big prize and our ‘Green Deal’ is a truly exciting idea which we will implement if we are elected to Government this year. The Green Deal will give every household in Britain the right to have home energy efficiency improvements worth up to £6,500. The upfront costs will be financed by the commercial sector; and repaid over a period of up to 25 years through the savings on energy bills. This will open up a whole new market in energy efficiency, create tens of thousands of skilled jobs and cut carbon emissions and it will also save families money and make homes warmer in winter - helping the elderly and so-called “fuel poor” in particular.”
