Premier League trophy visits Weeke Primary School

Weeke Primary School in Winchester was nominated by Steve Brine to have a special visit from the Premier League on Friday 27th April, giving all children a once in a lifetime opportunity see the Premier League Trophy up close, and take part in specialist practical and nutrition sessions hosted by Southampton Football Club coaches.

As one of the few lucky schools nationwide, the afternoon kicked off with an inspirational whole school assembly led by Jez Weeks from the Premier League, Steve Brine, coaches from Southampton Foundation in the Community and a special appearance from Southampton's mascot 'Sammy the Saint'.

Headteacher Michelle Loughrey said: "What a memorable experience for the children and staff. The Premier League trophy is an internationally recognisable symbol of sporting excellence; the opportunity to see this is in person is one we will not forget. We were delighted to be selected for this amazing opportunity.

Steve Brine said: "I was delighted to be able to bring the Premier League trophy down here to Winchester, and the looks on the kids' faces were priceless. The afternoon was truly unforgettable, and the energy that the Premier League team brought to the school, especially with their excellent Primary Stars campaign, was really something.

"As the Public Health Minister determined to see us do better on children's health and obesity, and as the local MP, the event was one I will remember for a long time."

The afternoon was packed with opportunities for the children to learn about nutrition and take part in active workshops, all linked to the Premier League Primary Stars programme - a new resource available for teachers containing classroom planning tools for Physical Education, Maths and English. The day focused around the values, which the Premier League Primary Stars campaign promotes; be ambitious, be inspiring, be connected and be fair.

Abby Goodchild, Deputy Headteacher said: "I couldn't believe it when I received the call from the Premier League to tell us about the visit. On the day, the atmosphere was fantastic and to see the children's faces as they walked into the hall to see the trophy adorned with ribbons and surrounded by our special guests was wonderful. It was a day the children will never forget".
