Launch of Cycle Winchester

Steve Brine took part in a busy cycle train before he spoke to a large group of cyclists in the Abbey Gardens at the launch of Cycle Winchester on Saturday 12th May.

Cycle Winchester was founded after a public meeting back in November, attended by 100 people, who showed great enthusiasm for "Making Winchester better by bike". It demonstrated how many people really want to cycle in Winchester, but also some of the issues that deter people from cycling.

Through a range of cycling events and other initiatives, the group hope to highlight the many benefits of cycling and encourage more people to get on their bikes and join the campaign to make Winchester better by bike.

Steve Brine, who led the All-Party Cycling Group in Parliament for a number of years when first elected, said: "Cycle Winchester is a really positive initiative and, like all great ideas, it's amazing it didn't exist before.

"As a keen cyclist, it's an easy one for me to support but as the Public Health Minister I am right behind anything which aids the active lives and prevention agenda. So many of us want to see cleaner air in Winchester – and across the country – so our ambition for a massive increase in the number of journeys made by bike, is extremely welcome.

"I have offered Cycle Winchester my full support and look forward to working with them as we seek a transformation of the local environment towards a more cycle friendly city."
