The Green Deal - saving you money

The new Green Deal Home Improvement Fund scheme was launched in June 2014 to help homes become more energy efficient to save money and make Britain greener.

Residents across Winchester & Chandler's Ford can get up to £7,600 back through a new Green Deal Home Improvement Fund (GDHIF) so they can take control of their bills and have warmer, greener homes.

The scheme helps householders, landlords and tenants to install a range of energy efficiency measures such as solid wall insulation and new heating systems by providing them with money back on the contributions they make towards improvements.

Under the new incentive scheme, which is available from June, domestic energy customers can get:

  • up to £1000 for installing two measures from an approved list; and/or
  • up to £6000 for installing solid wall insulation; and
  • up to £100 refunded for their Green Deal Assessment.

The scheme also entitles those who have bought a property in the 12 months prior to application to qualify for up to an additional £500 if they carry out energy efficiency improvements.

This follows the Government's commitment to provide a £540 million, three year energy efficiency package to make Britain's homes and public buildings more energy efficient.

Local MP Steve Brine was a member of the original Energy Bill Committee which put this legislation through the House of Commons in June 2011.  He says; "It was such a thrill to take this Bill through the House and I think all of us serving on the committee at the time knew it was a simple, yet ground-breaking idea, which would make a real difference in our constituencies.

"No-one is pretending there haven't been teething problems, mostly centred around access to finance under the original Green Deal plans, but the new Green Deal Home Improvement scheme has taken everything we've learned and come up with something even better.  I hope many of the people I represent locally will take a look at this."
