Steve Brine

Conservative Parliamentary Candidate for Winchester

Why should young voters back Cameron?

Why should young voters back Cameron?

In a few weeks’ time young voters will play a pivotal role in electing a new Winchester MP and a new Government.

Your vote can actually help remove Gordon Brown and change the Government of our country!

The Winchester constituency is highly marginal so your vote here really will decide whether the country has five more years of Gordon Brown or a new Government led by David Cameron after this election.  That is the realistic choice we face, please don’t waste your first vote.

Steve Brine is a local family man.  He and his wife Susie didn’t move here to contest this seat – they chose Winchester years ago as a great place to live and bring up their daughter, Emily.

For the past three years Steve has been the Conservative Candidate.  “I have met thousands of people on doorsteps, at the supermarket doing our weekly shop, on the university campus at Fresher’s Fair or just in and around the city”, he says.

“I’ve worked really hard to focus on the issues that matter to our area; fighting for the future of our health service, my top local priority – backing my party’s plans for thousands of new youth apprenticeships, recognising threats posed by climate change and speaking up for local services including our university.”

During this election campaign, Steve will be campaigning across the constituency and hopes to meet as many young voters as possible, either at home or around the university.  He will also be taking part (on Tuesday 4 May 2010) in a special University General Election Question Time chaired by the University Vice Chancellor so look out for more news on that via the S.U.

Steve adds; “This general election will be the most important for many years, with a great deal at stake, especially for young people.  Obviously I hope young and first time voters will consider voting Conservative but before they choose, I wanted to highlight a few of our policies:

  • A stronger economy, with more jobs.  People entering the job market now or in three year’s time have a high stake in the future of the economy.  Only the Conservatives have a credible plan for tackling Britain’s massive public sector debt and we have a solid blueprint for stable low-carbon growth and job creation.

  • To give young people the skills they need to get a sustainable job for the future we will fund 200,000 apprenticeships and pre-apprenticeships, 100,000 working pairings and 100,000 further education college places over a two-year period.  We’ll also provide help for unemployed young people sooner than at present.

  • An extra 10,000 university places in 2010, to give more people the opportunity to go to university and to help tackle rising youth unemployment.  We’ll also provide information about the true cost of attending different universities, the earnings of their graduates and students’ satisfaction with courses so prospective students can be well-informed before deciding whether to take on debt.

  • We will scrap stamp duty for 9 out of 10 first-time buyers and work with local communities to set up new Local Housing Trusts to build more affordable homes, giving you a much better chance of being able to get on the property ladder.

  • Changing politics – we are determined to give people more power and control.  We will sort out the mess of MPs’ expenses, cut the size of Parliament, Whitehall and the cost of politics in our country.
